Objectives of the Unit

The main aims of this section are to keep fully and up to date records pertaining to swine slaughter, swine tattooing (births) and swine transfers in the local farms (Malta & Gozo) so that through the collection of all these statistics, together with Veterinary support and in collaboration with the Koperativa ta' Min Irabbi l-Majjal Ltd. (K.I.M.) better control is maintained in the local swine industry.

Other activities carried out by the Swine Section:

• Disease surveillance
• Tattooing of all new-born piglets
• Animal Welfare inspections.
• Permitting extension of pig farms according to space requirements and overall management on farm.
• Regulating the pig farms according to the swine keeping regulations and the animal welfare act.
• Inspecting the live pigs once within the slaughterhouse (ante-mortem inspections) 
• Inspection of carcasses (post-mortem inspections)
