The Agriculture and Fisheries Regulation Department is the local Competent Authority to regulate the imports, local production, placing on the market and use of feeds and feed material intended for food-producing animals. Since farmed animals provide products for human consumption, the feeds which they are fed at every stage of their lifespan needs to be safe for the animal, the eventual consumer of products of animal origin, as well as the environment.
The main aims of the Animal Nutrition Section include:
-
Recommending the DG on the granting, withdrawal, or revocation of authorisations granted for import and/or marketing of animal feedstuffs in the Maltese Islands.
-
Conducting inspections of feed businesses such as traders, feed mills, feed stores, and on-farm mixers to ensure compliance with feed safety regulations, and codes of Good Practice.
-
Providing advice to the Director General on practices and policy related to compliance with relevant EU Legislation, namely Reg. (EC) 767/2009 on the placing on the market and use of feeds.
