The Veterinary Surgeons' Council
The Malta Veterinary Surgeons' Council was set up as per Article 39 - Veterinary Services Act 2001 (cap. 437). The VSC is a statutory regulator - undertaking the statutory responsibilities set out in the Veterinary Services Act 2001 - therefore the Council has Decisional, Executive and Advisory roles in different circumstances. The Council is composed of the chairman, and seven members (four elected, two appointed and the director of the FVRD or representative) and the registrar. They are:

As the regulatory body for veterinary surgeons in Malta the Veterinary Surgeons' Council's role is:
- To safeguard the health and welfare of animals committed to veterinary care through the regulation of the educational, ethical and clinical standards of the veterinary profession, thereby protecting the interests of those dependent on animals and assuring public health.
- To act as an impartial source of informed opinion on animal health and welfare issues and their interaction with human health.
- To maintain a register of veterinary surgeons eligible to practice in the Malta; to regulate veterinary education and to regulate professional conduct.
